Disc Golf Origins: Morley Field, San Diego

What course is on your bucket list?

One of the original disc golf courses in the world, Morley Field was established in the 1978 by course pro and Disc Golf Hall of Fame member Snapper Pierson, and has evolved into one of the premier disc golf destinations in the United States and busiest courses in the world. Nestled in the heart of Balboa Park, this course offers a unique blend of challenges and breathtaking views making it a must visit for players of all skill levels. The course overall isn’t too long, but it does have a few longer holes with many trees and tough pin placements that change every week between one of the 3 to 6 baskets positions for each hole! So in 2018 when it was decided that my wife and I would travel to San Diego for our 25th wedding anniversary, I knew I was going to have to carve out an early morning to go play a round. It helped that I chose to rent an Airbnb one block north of Balboa Park, close to the San Diego zoo (which my wife was really looking forward to) and less than 1 minute away from Morley Field!

Morley Field is a beautifully maintained course with lush greenery, rolling hills and diverse terrain accommodating every style of play from beginner to seasoned pro. I really enjoyed being surrounded by the stunning views of Balboa Park, and California’s pleasant weather (especially compared to an October snowstorm back in Calgary). As examples of some of the variety and scenic beauty of the course, I was thrilled by the fact that there was a pro-shop on site and immediately bought a leftover Morley Park Spring Fling 2018 disc as a souvenir and memento from the trip.

This planted the seed of an idea that took a few years to germinate and led me to develop Discworx, a business built around the idea of course specific discs that players can purchase from their mobile devices right from the disc course they are playing
at, with a portion of every sale going back to the course. And, now that my shop is finally up and running I am working with disc golf courses to set up their accounts. In the meantime I’m also busy taking on custom stamping orders. With lower minimums and faster turn arounds than the larger providers, Discworx may be the perfect solution for your bachelor party, small business, club or special event. As well, our popular PDGA approved Calgary fairway driver (pictured below) is a perfect present for any disc golf lovers on your list.

Little did I know that traveling to San Diego for my wedding anniversary would end up starting a business. However, playing Morley Field is an experience every disc golfer should add to their bucket list with its picturesque setting and engaging course layout. You’re sure to leave with great memories (and maybe also a souvenir disc) and a desire to return. Maybe you can even try to beat the 3-round course championship record of -38 which was set by Micah Dorius in 2007 and has stood for 17 years! Even if that challenge isn’t for you, I encourage you to pack your bags and head to San Diego for an unforgettable disc golf adventure.
